Javana Bernard (5ft 4in / 162.6cm 130lbs / 58.9kg ) has been named Most Valuable Player of the Women’s 2016 iBall FOCUS Combine Pennsylvania which took place on Saturday, November 19th, in King of Prussia, PA.
Bernard not only outperformed competitors during gameplay, she also displayed highly polished professional skills during the skills performance evaluation. Bernard was a top 3 selection in all skills assessment sessions offered at iBall FOCUS, including #1 overall in both shooting and ball handling. The sessions included a shooting proficiency drill led by Crista Ricketts, a LaSalle University Hall of Famer and former 7-Year Professional Player, a 3-on-3 situational drill led by iBall Agency Advisor, James Brant, a ball handling intensive drill led by Alvernia University Hall of Famee and former Harlem Globetrotter, Cornel Merricks, and a 1-on-1 read and react drill, directed by iBall CEO Howard Brown.
Javana Bernard is a quick and intelligent scoring point guard with very deep range. Her superior ball handling ability, and lights-out shooting proficiency from up to 24 feet is extraordinary.Bernard has a quick first step, great footwork and nice body control which allows her to maneuver her way through traffic to finish plays off the dribble. She also is very effective when running the pick and roll often stopping the shooting from deep when the on ball defender goes under the screen or does not recover quickly enough. Bernard excels in transition, leading the fast break to either finish, make a heady pass or pull up from 12-15 feet. Ambidextrous, Bernard can finish with either right or left hand.
Defensively, Bernard uses her quickness to stay in front of defenders. Her quick hands and long arms allow her to make deflections and often steal the ball from opposing point guards. Bernard is also active in the passing lanes, reading passes to create steals and fast break opportunities.
Equally impressive is Bernard’s attitude. Training staff commented on her calm demeanor and ability to communicate effectively with teammates. Her ability to lead also shines through with her attitude toward referees and her opponents. Other iBall staff also commented on her attention to detail.
“Coupled with her passion to play and positive attitude, Bernard was impressive with her adherence to all instructions both before and during the combine,” explained iBall CEO Howard Brown. iBall recognizes these as signs of a professional that will be independent, responsible, and influential in gaining the respect and support of leadership from teams anywhere on the globe. “We have found these traits to correlate with players having a long career and take them very seriously when considering our MVP and top player combine selections.”
Bernard recently completed a stint overseas and in Spain with the Europrobasket Academy. Before that, she was a national leader in scoring (20.8 ppg) and steals (84) during her senior year at Fisher College. She also ranked 1st in Steals, 2nd in scoring, and 4th in assists in the Association of Independent Institutions Conference (NAIA). Javana finished finished her Fisher College career as the All-Time leading Scorer with 1831 points.
