Brian Nerney (6ft 3in / 190.5cm 205lbs / 92.9kg, Guard, Middletown , NJ) has been named the Most Valuable Player of the 2016 iBall FOCUS New Jersey. On Sunday, March 13, in New Brunswick, NJ, Nerney displayed a wide range of professional level offensive and defensive basketball skills.
One scout commented saying, “He’s everywhere! He’s coming up with every steal, every lose ball. And I love the way he attacks and finishes at the basket.” After a number of discussions, it was Nerney’s dominance during the All-Star selection showcase that ultimately gave him the iBall FOCUS MVP nod.
Brian Nerney is a versatile player and natural scorer who can do a little bit of it all. He can attack the basket and utilize his strength and body control to draw contact and finish big plays. He can seal in the post utilizing good footwork and positioning- knock down the turn around or power up. He has a solid mid-range jump shot and is tough on the offensive boards. Brian possess solid fundamentals and displays a high IQ. He makes good decisions and has excellent court vision which allows him to find an open teammate anywhere on the court. On the defensive end Brian is a solid overall defender with the athleticism to cover smaller guards and the strength to defend bigger posts.
Nerney steadily improved, showing no signs of fatigue over the course of a 5- hour camp which featured training by Mars Mellish of All-State Basketball, former overseas professional players David Capers and Hamidu Rahman, and founder of Gym Work Training Deon Chew.
“Brian is a natural leader who brings energy to the court and displays positive body language. He is very vocal and a excellent communicator- often instructing and encouraging teammates during play,” commented multi-year international pro, and iBall Director of Scouting, Crista Ricketts. Other Scouts included A3 Hoops founder, Greg Alessandroni and former pro players, founder of Building Beyond Basketball, Cornel Merricks, and Bobbie Hudgins of Keep it Moving Entertainment.
Brian has experience playing at the US Semi professional level, signing in the American Basketball Association in 2015 and traveling and playing against the World Famous Harlem Globetrotters in 2012-13.
Before taking his game on tour across the globe, Nerney attended Alvernia University where he started 76 out of 84 games throughout his career. Nerney led the Crusaders to the 2012 Championship, 2011 MAC Championship and in 2010, was the ECAC Runner-up.
During his senior year, Nerney averaged just under 10 points and 8 rebounds. He was named Alvernia’s Male Athlete of the Week after putting up 24 points and pulling down 18 rebounds, including a double-double against Lycoming. Had a team-high ten rebounds and three steals at McDaniel and led Alvernia with 12 rebounds at Albright.
A leader on and off the court, Nerney was 2012 Alvernia University Business Department Award Winner for Outstanding Leadership and was also named Sport Management Association President.
